What does a professional organizer do?

A professional organizer is someone who provides information and services to assist people in many areas, such as household arrangement, paper management, filing systems, coaching, space planning, optimizing time and space management, wardrobe and meal planning, public speaking, and many other aspects of organization.

A professional organizer takes into account your personality, lifestyle, and budget while creating systems to simplify your life.

What does a professional organizer not do? Housekeeping or clerical work. Make you purchase fancy overpriced gadgets and containers. Expect you to be perfect, tidy, a minimalist, or anything you are not.

Will my sessions be like the TV shows?

In some ways, yes. In most ways, no!

Hiring a professional organizer is not the same as having a home makeover, complete with huge crew of housekeepers, carpenters, and decorators. While those shows are a lot of fun, they are not a realistic portrayal of what your sessions will entail.

Instead of focusing on how your space looks, a professional organizer focuses on how your space functions. While it will naturally look nicer with a more harmonious, less cluttered arrangement, you don't have to paint and buy new furniture unless you want to!

Do I have to be there?

I want to work with you so that I can teach you about your new systems. Being organized is not a one time event. Being organized is a continual process, and unless you know what to do, you may fall back into your old habits. In most cases, it is necessary for you to be there.

Exceptions, however, can be made in certain circumstances.

What will you think of my mess? I'm embarrassed.

Being organized is a skill, and there is no reason to be embarrassed that you need help learning that skill. Instead of judging you negatively for not being organized, I will think highly of you for wanting to improve your skills. It gives me pleasure to pass along my knowledge to someone who needs and appreciates it.

I'm a private person. Will anyone find out you were here or see pictures of my house?

Absolutely not! Your privacy is important. Everything that happens during your sessions will remain 100% confidential. My car signs will be removed before I get to your home or office. I will never mention to anyone that you were a client. If you volunteer a testimonial or word of mouth reference, I will be grateful, but I respect your privacy. It would be against my ethical code to break your trust, and I will maintain my reputation as a professional with integrity.

Although I may take digital pictures for my own reference, they are never shared and are deleted when the job is complete.

I may occasionally ask if non-identifying before and after shots can be used in my portfolio, but this is entirely optional and would never be done without permission.

Will you make me get rid of my stuff?

No. It is important to be realistic and understand that you will probably need to eliminate some clutter in order to live more efficiently. I will help you choose what stays and what goes, but the final decisions are yours.

How long will it take? What will it cost?

The amount of time spent will depend on many things, including the size of the area to be organized, the current condition, and your ability to make quick decisions about what to keep and what to eliminate.

Naturally, the price will vary according to each project. I charge a competitive hourly rate. Take into consideration that the money you spend on learning to get organized is an investment in increased productivity and peace of mind! My work pays for itself in positive results.

What are the benefits of getting organized?

1. You will have more time for yourself and your family.

When you have systems in place to easily manage your life, you will spend far less time cleaning, working, looking for things, or otherwise wasting time on drudgery. Life is much happier when you are able to spend time with your family and friends doing things you enjoy, knowing that your home is taken care of and there's nothing on the back burner waiting for you. You will still have to do chores, but if you are organized you can get them done much more quickly and efficiently.

2. You can take pride in your home.

Being disorganized usually leads to a messy house. Messy houses can become dirty houses. It can get embarrassing! When you are organized, things get put away, making the house look neater. Housework takes up much less time than before because you are not wasting your time with clutter and excess. Your house will probably not look like Martha Stewart was there, but you can take pride in a job well done when your home is reasonably neat and functions well.

3. You will be more relaxed.

Chaotic homes are stressful. It's impossible to be serene when there are constant piles of dishes and laundry and paperwork waiting for you to get to them. Clutter is like a giant "to do" list staring right at you everywhere you look. Everyone has a different threshold for the amount of clutter they can tolerate, but everyone feels better in a tidy, serene setting with nothing pressing to do.

4. You will save money.

When you are organized, you do not waste money buying things you already have or things you do not need at all. If you make simple changes, such as planning your meals and your wardrobes and only buying what you need instead of what you want, you will be shocked to see how much money you have been wasting. Many people get a sense of security from being surrounded by a lot of belongings. Real security, however, is not an emotion. It is having money in the bank because you were a good steward of the family budget.
